The Doorkeeper to the President of the United States served as a servant of the President of the United States during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Doorkeepers were in charge of receiving guests of the President and sending word of their arrival. The position was also considered a part of the President's security detail, with two doorkeepers working opposite shifts day and night during the early nineteenth century. Former Doorkeepers include one-time White House Chief Usher Thomas E. Stone and Edward McManus, Doorkeeper during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. The Doorkeeper was also sometimes provided with an assistant doorkeeper to help in their tasks.
