After prank calling a random stranger, that same stranger calls them back several times after being hung up on multiple times. When the two boys tell the man to just let it go, the man says Brady's name. At first, Brady plays it off, but the same stranger repeats his name, his full name as well as Sam's full name. Not only does the stranger know their names, but he knows where they live, which startles them both. Then, there is a knock on the door. The boys arm and brace themselves, but it is only Peyton Grey, Sam's girlfriend who works as a pizza delivery girl. At first, she believes she is being pranked by them, however, Sam assures her they aren't. The boys started thinking about what happened, thinking their friend, Jeff Mosley, is responsible because he had stormed off earlier however a message arrives from the stranger assuring them that his friend is not responsible. Startled, they try to calm down. That moment is short-lived as a few more messages arrive, this time being a series of blurry photos showing what looks like two people restrained on chairs. Then, Brady receives a photo message, clearly showing the two people who been restrained. It turns out to be his parents. He shows this to Sam and immediately receives a message saying "answer or they die". The phone rings and Sam puts it on speaker phone.

The image is changed, showing the prankster and their friend tied up, clearly beaten. Mr. Lee ties a bag around his head causing him to suffocate as Brady and Sam look on in horror. The image is changed, showing Brady's parents bound and gagged. Brady attempts to leave, but a message arrives telling Brady that if he leaves the house, he will die.

The house goes dark and the lights come on one by one, indicating where Mr. Lee wants them to go. Sam goes on his own, knowing that Brady is traumatized. After reaching the top of the stairs, the lights go off again.

Sam inspects the area carefully and eventually makes his way to the closet. Mr. Lee talks to Brady over the flatscreen making him an offer. Telling Brady to trade his and Sam's lives to save his parents. Sam opens the closet and Jeff falls out, bound and hung by the neck. Sam desperately tries to free him, but his neck has been slit. Jeff starts bleeding out as Sam tries to help. Sam removes the bandages, causing blood to spurt and Jeff dies.

Brady witnesses this and is horrified. As Sam is cleaning himself off, Brady tells Sam about Mr. Lee's offer and suggests they run away as he believes that his parents are dead. However, another video pops up on the flatscreen, showing Peyton being recorded from the bushes. The camera rushes closer and Peyton screams as the video cuts off.

Sam looks out the window and sees Peyton's car is still parked across the street. He realizes the video was taken during the time they were panicking.

Another video pops up, showing Peyton beaten and brusied. Brady, once again, suggests they run. Sam says that they can't or their loved ones will die. The two boys start to disagree and eventually get into a physical altercation, which causes them to fall on a table and knocks Brady out. Mr. Lee talks again, offering Sam the same deal. Sam, uncertain of the deal, instead ties Brady to the staircase railing.

After Brady comes to, another video is shown on the flatscreen. This time a young girl is seen playing around and joking. Sam then realizes he has seen this girl before on a social networking site. He checks it out and it turns out that young girl's profile page is filled with photos of Sam and Brady.

They then realize that Mr. Lee has been watching them for over a year. Sam scrolls down and finds a video called "Peyton 3". Brady panics and tells Sam not to watch, but is in vain as Mr. Lee streams the video on their flatscreen. The video reaveals Peyton cheating on Sam and having a secret fling with Brady. Sam confronts and beats Brady, however, Brady fights back. A video begins playing on the flatscreen again.

Once again, the video shows Brady's parents, but Sam sees the clock on the wall in the video and realizes that it's already been two hours, revealing that the video was prerecorded. Mr. Lee calls them again, giving Sam another chance at the offer.

Sam grabs a knife from the kitchen and frees Brady, Sam demands live feed of both Brady's parents and Peyton. He hangs up and a video appears of Mr. Lee in front of camera, showing the conversation he had with them. As he walks offscreen, Brady's parents are shown dead from neck wounds, similar to the one Jeff had.

As the video continues, it shows Mr. Lee holding a food menu. The name on the menu is shown to be Mr. Lee's and shows Jeff gagged and bound in the back of a white van parked close to their house.

The two realize that, from the beginning, the stranger wanted them to kill each other. Brady, devastated, mourns his parents' death and Sam, now knowing that they could've left, decides to end this once and for all. He grabs a bat and goes to the door. At first he is reluctant, but Brady says to go and that he'll protect himself and the house.

Sam goes outside and goes up to the white van. He opens the back door and discovers Peyton beaten but alive. He frees her and both are relieved to see each other and hug.

Meanwhile, Brady decides to investigate and to go outside as well, but is ambushed. He screams loud enough for Sam and Peyton to hear and Sam decides to go help Brady and tells Peyton to call 911.

Afterwards, they meet in the backyard and a masked man lunges at them. Sam restrains and stabs him with the knife. Thinking they're safe, they remove the mask, only to reveal the man behind the mask was Brady. They try to save him, but to no avail and grieve over his death.

The real masked man appears and Sam asks what they did to deserve this. Then, he tells Sam his story. The young lady from the beginning of the movie, Ms. Kolbein, panics after hearing that someone is in her home, arms herself with a gun. She drops her phone under her dresser, not knowing she was a victim of a prank call. She walks into the hallway and inspects her daughter's bedroom, finding it to be empty.

She hears someone opening a door and instinctively shoots, but it turns out to be her daughter using the bathroom. Devastated at what she has done, she turns the gun on herself and fires. Sam shocked and unware of these previous events, pleads with Mr. Lee, saying that they never meant to hurt anyone.

The masked man kicks him and holds him down with his foot, saying he deserves to suffer like he did and points the gun at Sam. As he braces himself along with Peyton a gunshot is heard. It is shown to be morning and in the house, the video of Peyton and Brady cheating is playing.

Sam is now seen holding a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. He stands up, dazed, and sees a leg sticking out in the back-door and opens it. Sam sees Brady dead and Peyton lying still. Sam checks on her, only to find out that she is dead from a gunshot wound to head, revealing that the masked man shot Peyton and kept Sam alive to take the blame for the murder.

The police arrive and tell Sam to drop the weapons, but he cannot as they are glued to his hands. He gets on his knees and is shown to be reacting hysterically.

The news later reports the whole event as a mass murder and name Sam as the culprit and his motive being the cheating between Peyton and Brady causing him to kill them and Brady's parents, all according to the masked man's plan.
