The community was named for the fact two railroads intersected diagonally near the town site.
Geography
Diagonal is located at 40°48′32″N 94°20′29″W (40.808819, -94.341510) along the Grand River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.90 square miles (2.33 km2), all of it land.
2010 census
As of the census of 2010, there were 330 people, 119 households, and 71 families residing in the city. The population density was 366.7 inhabitants per square mile (141.6/km2). There were 145 housing units at an average density of 161.1 per square mile (62.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.9% White, 0.3% African American, and 1.8% Native American.
There were 119 households of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 40.3% were non-families. 37.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.79.
The median age in the city was 52.8 years. 15.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 16.9% were from 25 to 44; 24.9% were from 45 to 64; and 36.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 45.2% male and 54.8% female.

The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.85.
