Dennis Frederick Evans was a British inorganic chemist who gained fame for inventing methods for determination of the magnetism of chemical compounds. After his PhD at Oxford, he conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago under Robert S. Mulliken. He joined the chemistry faculty at Imperial College, rising to the rank of Professor. He collaborated often with Geoffrey Wilkinson, but conducted independent studies on magnetism. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1981.
Evans' Method
Evans developed a method for converting bulk magnetic susceptibility of a solution to the magnetic susceptibilities of a solute, which is typically a metal complex. The method relies on recording NMR signal for a standard solution inserted into a solution containing the compound of interest. Because of its easy implementation, the method has been widely introduced into teaching and research laboratories.
