Taylor grew up and went to high school in Ohio, where he wrestled for the St. Paris Graham Falcons. Taylor earned himself a 180-2 career record throughout high school, winning four consecutive Ohio State wrestling championships. One of those wins came against future Ohio State wrestler Logan Stieber.

Outside of wrestling, Taylor was also an impressive student, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Taylor is renowned for his exceptional collegiate wrestling career at Penn State under head coach Cael Sanderson. Taylor redshirted his freshman year, and the next year went 38-1, taking second at the NCAA Championships.

The next year, as a sophomore, Taylor went 32-0, winning the NCAA Championships, as well as the Dan Hodge Trophy.

During his junior season, Taylor posted a 30-2 record on the season. He took second at the NCAA Championships, losing to four-time champion Kyle Dake from Cornell University.

As a senior, Taylor went 34-0 and won both the NCAA Championships and the Dan Hodge Trophy. Taylor finished his career 134-3, tying Penn States record for career falls with 53. Taylor was also responsible for helping Penn State to win four consecutive team championships.
