The Liberals have not held a seat in the Legislature since 2003. Lamoureux first attempted to win a seat when he contested a by-election in Lloydminster but only collected 77 votes (2.7% of the total), barely enough for third place ahead of the Progressive Conservative candidate. In the 2016 general election, he ran in the new constituency of Regina Pasqua, again finishing third albeit with a larger share of the vote (958 votes, 10.9%).

In January 2017, Lamoureux announced his candidacy for a by-election in the constituency of Saskatoon Meewasin. It was left vacant after the death of the sitting MLA, Roger Parent, in November of 2016.

Lamoureux resigned the Liberal leadership on September 9, 2017.
