Like his friends Lou Harrison and Bill Colvig, Daniel Schmidt has built many aluminum and brass gamelans including the Berkeley Gamelan, the Sonoma State Gamelan, and helped build the aluminum gamelan that is used by Gamelan Pacifica in Seattle. He is currently working on an aluminum gamelan, "Gift", in collaboration with students at Mills College.
