He has been the editor-in-chief of the Norwegian weekly left-wing news magazine Ny Tid in 2005-06 and from 2008 to 2015, and a reporter for the conservative newspaper Aftenposten from 1995 to 2005.

He is the son of writer Hans Herbjørnsrud and historian Anna Tranberg, and graduated from West County High School, Missouri, in 1989. From 1991 to 1994, Dag Herbjørnsrud studied political science at the University of Oslo. He graduated as cand. philol. of history of ideas in 2002 with an English-language thesis on the later philosophy of Robert Nozick titled Leaving Libertarianism: Social Ties in Robert Nozick's New Philosophy. In the thesis, Herbjørnsrud argued that Nozick left libertarianism in his later years. In a 2005 interview with the Norwegian liberal-conservative periodical Minerva, Herbjørnsrud stated that Nozick advocated the welfare state, and that Anarchy, State, and Utopia is not representative for Nozick's writings.
