A Primer of Old Testament Text Criticism

Dafydd Rhys ap Thomas (1912-2011) was a theologian, specialising in Old Testament studies.

He was the youngest son of Revd W. Keinion Thomas. Following a period of early education at home he attended Beaumaris Grammar School, then proceeded to the University College of North Wales, Bangor, where he graduated with honours in Hebrew and Semitic Languages in 1934. He later gained an MA in theology from Mansfield College, Oxford.

In 1938 he was appointed lecturer (and later, Senior Lecturer) in Hebrew, at his old college, remaining in the position until his retirement in 1977.

His published writings include A Primer of Old Testament Text Criticism (1947, revised ed. 1961), and with Gwilym H. Jones, Gramadeg Hebraeg y Beibl (1976).

Between 1961 and 1972 he was secretary of the Society for Old Testament Study, and its president between 1972 and 1974.

He died in May 2011. His ashes were buried in his wife's grave (she died in August 2004) in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
