daemontools is the "seminal process supervision toolkit" written by Daniel J. Bernstein as an improvement to the inittab, /etc/ttys, init.d or rc.local alternatives, providing all of the following features.

  • Easy service installation and removal
  • Easy first-time service startup
  • Reliable restarts
  • Easy, reliable signalling
  • Clean process state
  • Portability
  • Due to lack of ongoing maintenance for daemontools, newer tools such as runit have subsequently been preferred by some.
