DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia

DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia (DIS) is a non-profit study abroad organization with locations in Copenhagen (Vestergade) and Stockholm (Valhallavägen), offering semester, academic year, and summer programs taught in English.

Established in 1959, DIS offers students enrolled in North American universities engaging and challenging coursework enriched by faculty who teach what they do, field studies, hands-on learning opportunities, and study tours across Europe. Cultural engagement opportunities integrate students into the local culture and students gain academic knowledge and intercultural skills to prepare for a globalized world.

DIS students are usually undergraduate juniors or seniors from highly selective North American universities. With over 300 academic courses to choose from between Copenhagen and Stockholm, as well as semester and summer options, students are able to mix and match courses to meet major requirements.

The majority of the faculty at DIS are hired as part-time instructors, while also holding permanent jobs in academia, government, the public sector and the professions. All have final university degrees qualifying them to teach at universities. Some staff members also teach courses, and a few faculty are employed on a permanent basis.

Study tours are fully integrated in the academic program. Early in the semester, the students travel on a short study tour for three days in Denmark, Sweden, or a neighboring country, combined with a two-day seminar in Copenhagen or Stockholm. Later in the semester, the students travel with their core course on a week-long study tour in Europe. Additionally, they can take an elective course with an integrated Optional Study Tour, or explore Europe on a DIScovery Trip during two additional breaks.

The DIS application process varies by university. Most students apply to DIS from their home campus, typically through the study abroad or international office. Other students apply directly to DIS on a rolling basis.
