Cumberland County, Republic of Vermont was a short-lived county in Vermont, comprising two counties which seceded from New York in 1777: Cumberland County and Gloucester County. On 17 March 1778 Bennington and Unity Counties created as the first two original counties in Vermont. On 21 March 1778 Unity County renamed Cumberland County. In 1781, this county was broken up into three counties in Vermont and one that eventually became part of New Hampshire. A further reference is The History of Eastern Vermont from its earliest settlement to the close of the 18th century by Benjamin H. Hall (Albany, NY 1858).
