History
Coulter had its start in the 1880s by the building of the Chicago & Great Western Railway through that territory.
Geography
Coulter is located at 42°44′4″N 93°22′9″W (42.734311, -93.369173).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.35 km2), all of it land.
2010 census
As of the census of 2010, there were 281 people, 107 households, and 76 families residing in the city. The population density was 114.7 inhabitants per square mile (44.3/km2). There were 117 housing units at an average density of 47.8 per square mile (18.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.4% African American, 12.1% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.9% of the population.
There were 107 households of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 9.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.0% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12.
The median age in the city was 34.5 years. 29.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.6% were from 25 to 44; 27.3% were from 45 to 64; and 10.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 55.2% male and 44.8% female.
2000 census
As of the census of 2000, there were 262 people, 105 households, and 66 families residing in the city. The population density was 106.8 people per square mile (41.3/km²). There were 118 housing units at an average density of 48.1 per square mile (18.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.18% White, 3.82% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.20% of the population.
There were 105 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 114.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 110.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,208, and the median income for a family was $38,958. Males had a median income of $26,538 versus $20,625 for females. Education
CAL Community School quality PreK-12th grade public education to the communities of Coulter, Alexander, and Latimer. All grades are located in one building just south of Latimer, approximately 1 mile north of Coulter. From 1998-2005 Dows Community School whole grade shared with CAL. In 2005 Dows began sharing with Clarion-Goldfield Community Schools. At that time CAL re-established a full K-12 program. Facility improvements have recently been completed to the CAL Communutiy School including a new chemistry/physics lab, art classroom, vocational ag space, daycare center and before/after school program. In 2001 another project was completed building an addition of 6 classrooms (including ICN and Computer labs), a new Library Media Center, and renovating the old library into classroom space. The district is considering sharing junior high football and possibly other programs with Belmond-Klemme Community School. CAL has an enrollment of 307 students (2006) in grades K-12 and has experienced increasing enrollment for the past 2 years, something very rare in rural Iowa.
