The Corps of North Carolina Light Dragoons was raised on April 13, 1775 at Wilmington, North Carolina as a state militia unit and later for service with the Continental Army. The regiment saw action at the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown. The North Carolina General Assembly decided to retain these units, They were re-organized into a new Regiment of State Troops under ex-Continental Col. François DeMalmedy, .
