Contradictio in adiecto is Latin for "a contradiction between parts of an argument" (adiectum "brought about, brought forward"). It differs from a "contradiction in terms", which refers to two contradictory words normally appearing together, e.g., "cold heat". It is "the characteristic denoted by the adjective stands in contrast to the noun." It is a kind of oxymoron, for example, "There was a deafening silence in the room."
