According to the Constitution, the President of the Lebanese Republic is the commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). The operational command is the responsibility of the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

This is a list of the LAF commanders from its establishment in 1945 to the present:

  • 1 August 1945 to 22 September 1958: Fuad Chehab
  • 9 October 1958 to 31 January 1959: Toufic Salem
  • 1 February 1959 to 30 June 1965: Adel Shehab
  • 1 July 1965 to 6 January 1970: Emile Boustany
  • 7 January 1970 to 24 July 1971: Jean Njeim
  • 25 July 1971 to 9 September 1975: Iskandar Ghanem
