A seventeen-year-old from Donaghmore, County Tyrone, McVeigh disappeared in 1975. The IRA allege he had confessed to being an army agent, instructed to infiltrate the IRA. However, it has never indicated what specific act prompted McVeigh's abduction. A number of unsuccessful searches were carried out for his body since 1999, notably in 2003, 2011, and 2012.
