Clown House Records are an independent digital record label located in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The record label came to prominence in early 2013 when it announced it would be the first UK record label to offer all the music produced by its artists for free.

History

Clown House Records was formed in 2013 by friends, Spencer Loney and Nicholas Smith. The record label had hoped to provide music to fans completely free of charge, however they were unable to find a viable model to support both artist and label.

In 2015, Clown House Records announced a new business model via its social media account on Twitter and Facebook, indicating they had changed to a #PayWhatYouWant model, where music fans decided how much they thought the music they were about to download was worth.

In May 2015, rumours began to circulate that Clown House Records had decided to support an annual Oxjam charity event run by the international charity, Oxfam. Clown House Records have failed to make a statement on the subject, but Eventbrite have listed tickets to an event called 'Clown House Records does Oxjam' indicating the record label is preparing for the month long Oxfam event which runs throughout October.
