It is a rhizomatous perennial herb growing 30 to 80 centimeters tall. Around the base of the plant are 5 or 6 wide, hairy, oval-shaped green leaves up to 30 centimeters long and 12 broad. The tall, erect inflorescence produces one or more umbels of hairy flowers. Each flower has six pink to reddish-purple tepals between 1 and 2 centimeters long. The fruit is a bright blue berry about a centimeter long.
