Claude A. Taylor was a chief justice on the South Carolina Supreme Court. He was born in 1902 in Gilbert, South Carolina. For ten years, he served ten years in the General Assembly of South Carolina including as its Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1935 to 1936. He was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1944 and became its chief justice in 1961. Taylor began the practice of opening sessions of the court with a prayer. He died on January 21, 1966, and is buried at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
