City Deep is an industrial suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region F. Locally is a large container terminal of Transnet Freight Rail in operation, the most significant dry port of the country, and the Joburg Market (formerly named as Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market).

History

City Deep is also the name of Africa's largest dry port and was developed by the South African Railways (SARS) in 1977. The container terminal connects the port in Durban and other ports by road and rail as well as parts of Southern Africa. Forty percent of container export/imports pass along the City Deep/Durban route in 2003. The port contains gantry cranes and reaches cranes with a capacity for 2000 ground slots and a capacity of 375,000 TEU per annum.

Joburg Market (formerly named as Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market) is also situated at City Deep and was opened in September 1974. It is a 65,000sqm facility, the largest market supplier of fruit and vegetables in South Africa and Africa with 45,000 buyers visiting each day.
