Lloyd began screenwriting with the first four seasons of The Golden Girls. From there he moved on to the comedy Wings, and then to Frasier, where he became its showrunner. While Executive Producing Frasier it won the Emmy for best comedy an unprecedented five consecutive years. Lloyd left Frasier after its first seven seasons, returning to helm its final season. From Frasier he moved on to such series as Out of Practice and Back To You and then to Modern Family. Modern Family equaled Frasier's record of winning the Emmy for best comedy in its first five years and with that Lloyd became the only person to have achieved this distinction on two different series. For his work on Modern Family he has also won a Peabody Award and multiple Writers' Guild Awards. Recent works as a screenwriter include the animated feature film Flushed Away (2006), for which he received an Annie Award.

Lloyd is the son of Arline and sitcom writer David Lloyd (1934–2009). Since 1995, he has been married to actress and voiceover performer Arleen Sorkin, with whom he has two sons, Eli and Owen.
