  • Wall Painting and Sculpture Making Competition

It is a tradition in Chinese High School to hold a "Beautify the Classroom Contest" biannually. The competition is divided in two parts, which is the indoor, classroom’s wall painting and the outdoor, sculpture making. On a class unit, the students will have about 4 weeks to prepare for the competition before exhibiting to public. Students need to organize everything by themselves, including deciding the picture to paint, asking for donation for buying the ingredients, arranging time to work on the contest while covering their study, contacting the landscaping company and so on and so forth. Students use time after school to do the preparation and sometimes they stay at school until very late, and that makes students feel a strong attachment to the school. The sense of accomplishment students feel when they finish their work in the deadline is so strong that it unconsciously encouraged them to work hard on their study too. On the day the Beatify the Classroom Contest is held, the school will be open to public to exhibit the students’ work. Thousands of people from the state will gather to Chinese High School to enjoy the exhibition, and it has become a custom to many families to attend this grand event biannually. Through the exhibition, the public, especially the students’ parent will have opportunity to get more understanding about what their children learn from the school and know more about their study environment.

    Background

Beautify the classroom contest was first introduced by Dr. 严元章 in 1955. Dr. 严元章 believed that students should not only focusing on the academic success, but also need to learn the importance of building social network. The purpose of this contest is to let every wall in the school to show a spirit, every corner on the campus to tell a moral, and every student to be able to see their contribution to the school. Through this contest, the beautifulness of the environment of Chinese High School can be maintain and even increase, at the same time the bond among the students become stronger and they become more independent.
