Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) is a professional management accounting designation issued beginning in January 2012. The CGMA mission is to promote the science of management accounting on global stages. The CGMA designation champions management accountants and the value they add to organizations.
Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), a proprietary designation for management accountants, is powered by two of the world’s most respected accounting bodies, and advances the global discipline of management accounting. The CGMA demonstrates management accounting expertise, determination and commitment to achieving sustainable business success. The issuing body is a joint venture owned by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). The designation is available through either an AICPA or CIMA Pathway. The AICPA Pathway requires AICPA members to be CPAs, pass the CGMA exam, have 3 years management accounting experience, and be a member of the AICPA. The CIMA Pathway requires CIMA members to pass the required CIMA examinations including the CIMA certificate in Business Accounting, have 3 years management accounting experience and be a member of the CIMA. The CGMA holder is not just a number cruncher but understands how to manage relationship in business,( inter and intra)..WIth a CGMA qualification you can strategically alter a business direction to be more competitive and therefore more profitable.You will not look at profitability , but you will be forward looking , understanding your competitors and competition ( external environment).You bring different competencies , ie technical , business , people and leadership skills in wide ranging business situations , helping to create a sustainability competitive advantage.Your technical skills spread through advanced financial management-financial accounting reporting, consolidation ,IFRS ,hedge accounting and cutting edge treasury initiatives.As a CGMA accountant, the numbers you prepare mean more than numbers, you understand that these numbers are reflecting business health, so you direct business and build relationships across the board.We live in a world of constant change,as CGMA , you are on top of change management ,advising, directing and implementing change, by understanding the various risks and how they can be mitigated.CGMA lead people , and are vast in judgement ,interpersonal and understands that whatever we do , objectivity, integrity, professional due care, confidentiality and professionalism are key cardinals to both individual and corporate success.
Beginning in 2015, AICPA voting members who seek to obtain the CGMA credential will have to pass a new examination.
