Cerium acetylacetonate is a compound with formula Ce(C5H7O2)3. It is the cerium complex of acetylacetone.
Uses
Cerium acetylacetonate is used in the formation of mesoporous nanocrystalline ceria using the sol-gel process. The cerium source can be cerium nitrate, acetate or acetylacetonate, but the unique properties of cerium acetylacetonate yield this effect: the shorter length of the stabilizer's hydrocarbon chain, the smaller the crystallite size in the end product. For the other two sources of cerium, the opposite was true: a short hydrocarbon chain in the stabilizer prevented coagulation of ceria particles in the sol.
Cerium acetylacetonate can also be used along with gadolinium acetylacetonate to synthesize gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) gel powders. They are the precursors in the sol-gel method.
