Carmel School (Hindi: कार्मेल स्कूल) (also known as Carmel Convent School, Giridih) is a convent private school located in the Giridih district of Jharkhand, India. Established in 1954 by Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa (CSST), the school is one of the renowned institutions in the region. The school provides hostel for girls. The boys attend the school as day scholars. The students of Carmel School are referred to as Carmelites. Carmel School also has a neighbouring branch known as Carmel Hindi Medium School (Hindi: कार्मेल हिंदी मीडियम ), that provides education to students with a Hindi curriculum.

History

The school was founded in 1954 by the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa (CSST) a community started by Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima. The school was the first school in the region to impart education in English medium to the pupils. As of December 2014, Sr Divya is the principal of the school.

Nature

Carmel School, Giridih founded in 2011 is owned and administered by the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa, Northern Province. The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi and prepares the students for the ICSE board examination for class X.

Curriculum

It is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi and prepares the students for the ICSE board examination for class X. It provides education up to 12th standard with the ISC Board. The admission for new students starts from December and the new session start from the second half of March. It is co-educational and Instruction is primarily in English. There are separate kindergarten, Primary, higher and senior secondary sections in the campus. Among the facilities provided to the pupils are a computer laboratory, science laboratories, library, and playground. The classes are from Nursery to Class XII and the students are offered both science and commerce streams in their senior secondary curriculum. Computer Applications is taught as a compulsory subject from Class III until class IX. In class IX the students have an option of choosing Computer Applications or Economics for their matriculation examination. The school is equipped with a lab having a handful computers for computer literacy and programming courses. The computer courses offered at the school include: GW-BASIC, Java (using the BlueJ IDE), and Logo. The standard Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses are also offered as part of the science curriculum. From Class IX onwards, the students have Physics, Chemistry and Biology Lab for their Practicals. These Practicals helps them in excelling in the Theory Examinations and also in gaining knowledge. The arts and sciences offering at the school are: Mathematics (covering geometry, algebra and the calculus), English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Geography, Environmental Science, Economics, Commerce and History. As students move from 9th grade to 12th grade, they are allowed more freedom in choosing their own classes; they typically opt for a science or commerce related curriculum to facilitate their entrance into college. Carmelites have cleared many competitive examinations and made their way into reputed institutions. Many have excelled in top medical and engineering examinations in institution like Indian Institutes of Technology, AIPMT, AIEEE, VIT University Vellore, CMC Vellore, COMEDK, CBSE and PMT. The School has produced many doctor, engineers, Lawyers.

Exams Pattern and Vacations

Four examinations are held in this school in an academic year. They are:

  • 1st Unit Test              -   Held in May
  • 1st Terminal Exam    -   Held in September - October
  • 2nd Unit Test            -   Held in December
  • 2nd Terminal Exam   -   Held in February - March
  • Board Examinations of Class X and Class XII are also held in the month of March. Two vacations are also included in an academic year. They are:

  • Summer Vacation (After 1st Unit Test)    -   In June - July
  • Winter Vacation   (After 2nd Unit Test)   -   In December - January
  • Extracurricular activities

    Activities like elocution, debate, quiz, declamation, dance, music, sports and games are held and points are awarded. At the end of the year, the house with most points is awarded a running trophy. Pupils are individually given certificates for outstanding performances.

    Community service

    The school encourages students to participate in various community building activities such as helping poor students, organizing public awareness campaigns, etc. The School has adopted some villages and taken the responsibility of educating their children, The senior school students regularly visit the villages and take classes for the under privileged kids.

    Sports

    The school has its own play grounds for football, cricket along with courts for basketball and volleyball. Kabaddi, Kho kho, slow cycling race are other sports being played here. Every year a Sports day and students are given a break from classes to participate in various sports. Various Athletics events are held for students. Junior students also participate in events such as Sack Race, Spoon race, Copy race, etc.

    Athletics

    Races 800, 400m, 200m, 100m, Relay race, Shot put throw, Discus throw, Long-jump, Triple-jump, High-jump etc. are held for boys and girls, and points are awarded house-wise to the four houses namely Rose, Shamrock, Sunflower and Violet. Students have won athletics events at the national level.

    Cricket

    It is a popular sport among the students who compete in an annual Cricket championship among various houses. The school team also plays matches with other school in the district which are conducted by school authorities.

    Football

    Students compete in an annual Football championship among various houses. The Final matches of the football championship are popular and the students are given a break from classes to cheer up their teams.

    School Uniform

    The school uniform consists of the colors sky blue, navy blue and black. The sky blue school vest and blouse along with navy blue trousers and skirt along with a neck tie are the central items, with an optional navy blue blazer or sweater for winter wear. The neck tie is navy blue in color along with slant sky blue stripes. Socks are Navy blue with black leather shoes. On Wednesday and Saturday, white canvas shoes with white socks are worn by all the students including Class X and above. There is Physical Training (P.T.) for Class I to Class VII during Wednesday and for Class VIII & Class IX during Saturday. For Class X and above classes, there is no P.T. From 2014 new session onwards, on Wednesday and Saturday, white pants and T. Shirts according to the House colors (For Boys), White canvas shoes and white shocks should be worn. There is Pink color T. Shirts for Junior Students (Class I to Class IV), Red color T. shirt for Rose House, Green color T. Shirts for Shamrock House, Yellow color T. Shirts for Sunflower House, Violet color T. Shirts for Violet House during the P. T. days (Wednesday and Saturday). K. G. (Kindergarten) students have Red color T. shirts during P. T. days.

    Alumni Association

    EXCA (EX-Carmelite Association) is the alumni body for the school which organises alumni meets and get-together events for the ex students. See also
