Carl Brewer (born March 8, 1957) is an American politician who is a Democratic candidate for Governor of Kansas. He served as the 100th mayor of Wichita, Kansas and was Wichita's first elected African-American mayor. He won his first term in 2007. Brewer was re-elected to a second four-year term on April 5, 2011 . Brewer's final term ended on April 13, 2015 with Mayor-elect Jeff Longwell being sworn in the following day.

Biography

Carl Brewer was born in 1957 and has five siblings he grew up with in Kansas, being raised primarily by his mother with the assistance of his grandparents.

Brewer’s first full-time job was at a meat packing plant when he was 16 years old, he also spent many summers with his aunt and uncle on their ranch in Oklahoma, where he helped farmed.

Brewer later graduated from Wichita North High School in 1975. He attended Friends University. He has worked in the aviation industry (Boeing, Spirit, and Cessna) for 32 years. He began as a sheet metal worker. He joined the Machinists Union and became a union steward. He later moved forward as a manufacturing engineer and eventually moved onto the management team at Spirit Aviation. Brewer retired from Spirit in early 2017.

Brewer served in the Kansas Army National Guard, becoming the first African American President of his Officer Candidate School Class. He served as Company Commander of infantry and artillery companies for the Kansas National Guard.

Brewer represented Wichita's City Council District 1 from 2001 to 2007. On April 3, 2007, he defeated incumbent Carlos Mayans in the race for mayor of Wichita by 61 percent to 37 percent.

While Mayor of Wichita, Brewer also worked to develop economic opportunities for the city and state by serving in the following roles:

•President of the Kansas League of Municipalities

•Board member of the National League of Cities (NLC)

•Chaired NLC Community and Economic Development Steering Committee

•Chaired NLC Large Cities Advisory Board

•Committee assignments the Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition, Regional Economic Area Partnership (REAP), the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the Kansas League of Municipalities and National League of Cities

•Presidential appointment representing Kansas on the Immigration Task Force

•Volunteer service with Wichita Black Arts

Brewer serves on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities and is a member of Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns Organization.

In 2017, Brewer announced that he would run for Governor of Kansas in the 2018 election. If elected Brewer would become the first African-American governor of the state.
