Capricho of London with the Port, the Bank of England, the Monument and Saint Paul's Cathedral is an oil painting made by the Dutch Griffier family, who became well-known in the United Kingdom. Jan Griffier and his children, Jan and Robert, cultivated the landscape according to his artistic direction.

Description

This canvas shows London almost a century after the devastating fire of September 1666. A courtly couple costumed in the period of George II of Great Britain promenades in the foreground. The commercial peak of the subsequent century is portrayed here by the abundant merchant ships on the Thames. In the centre stands the famous Monument column built in 1677 by architect Sir Christopher Wren who was commissioned for reconstruction of much of the city after the fire.

Beyond the hamlet is Saint Paul's Cathedral planned by Wren between 1676 and 1710.
