Caerwys F.C. is a football club representing the Flintshire town of Caerwys in Wales, and they play their home games at Lon yr Ysgol at Caerwys.
Caerwys currently play in the Clwyd League East after the reorganisation of the Clwyd League in the 2011-12 season.
Brief History
A football team has represented Caerwys since the turn of the 20th century when the club was first established and were initially known as Caerwys Town. Initially the club just played friendly matches against local teams until a Caerwys team joined the Halkyn Mountain League during the post-war period.
In the late sixties, a Caerwys team competed in the Llandyrnog & District Summer League, which was a league that was originally organised in the 1950s for the local farming community. Success was achieved in 1971 and 72 when Caerwys won the League Championship, and also did well in knockout competitions, winning the Times Shield on three occasions in 1970, 1989 and 1990. During this period large crowds of up to 600 people turned out for those finals, something which is not often seen at Caerwys in modern times.
In 1983, a winter league team was entered into Division 3 of the Clwyd League. After a steady rise through the divisions of the Clwyd League system, the team progressed through to the Clwyd League Premier Division under the guidance of Manager Jack Phillips (who had also run the club’s youth team for ten seasons). In the 1999-2000 season, Caerwys finished runners-up in the Premier Division ensuring they gained promotion to the Welsh Alliance League, where they remained for eight seasons. The team enjoyed mediocre league success but had its best spell since in the 2003-04 season when they reached three major cup semi-finals including the FAW Trophy and the North Wales Challenge Cup under the guidance of Russ Pierce and Mark Speakman.
In 2008 the club resigned from the Welsh Alliance League and returned to the Clwyd League (where their reserve team had been playing) to concentrate on putting their financial resources into building a new pavilion, as well as the added financial strain of running a team in the Welsh Alliance. In 2011, the club, along with other Flintshire-based teams in the Clwyd League, were moved into the Clwyd League East as a result of the reorganisation of the Clwyd League.
