Bukhari (بخاري), also spelled as Bokhari, Bukhary and Bukhori, is a common surname in Central and Western Asia, meaning "from Bukhara" (in today's Uzbekistan). Its Arabic version al-Bukhari (Arabic: البخاري) was also used in the medieval Islamic world as a nisba (a specifier which is added at the end of names). This surname is also used by the Naqvi Bukhari Sayyids, descendants of the Prophet Muhammad through the lineage of Imam Ali al-Hadi.
