The buccal index is a term used in different fields and is defined accordingly:

  1. In ultrasound diagnostics: The buccal index >20 mm was introduced by E. E. Kortshagina as a marker for diabetic fetopathy.
  2. In dentistry: The cross-mounting buccal index was developed by N. Chaimattayompol for the definitive implant abutment selection, framework design and fabrication.
  3. In zoology: The buccal Index, introduced by J Ayarzagiiena, is calculated by premaxilla width + 10th tooth width/rostral length which tells about buccal shape, trapezoidal or quadrangular.
