The British International School, Kuala Lumpur (or "'BSKL") is a British Curriculum international school in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. It accommodates children aged 2 to 18 years. In 2011, it relocated its campus to a purpose-built site. In 2013, an additional campus opened to accommodate student growth and improve facilities for older students. In 2016, a new campus will open on the site to accommodate Secondary students. It will also house the Sixth Form centre.
Governance
The British International School is an independent, British-run organisation established to provide British education to the expatriate community of Kuala Lumpur and surrounding areas. The school is governed by the board of directors of the British Schools Foundation that delegates powers for the day-to-day running of the school to the Headteacher, Janet Brock. The British International School of Kuala Lumpur is registered with the Qualification and Curriculum Authority in the United Kingdom. It is a member of The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).
Curriculum
The school follows the English National Curriculum, which is one of three main internationally recognised curricula. Students who graduate from National Curriculum schools therefore can choose to study in most universities worldwide without requiring to sit additional examinations. The National Curriculum is known for its structure which outlines detailed teaching requirements including minimum teaching hours for subjects as well as guidelines on teaching the gifted and talented.
Student body
The majority of students come from expatriate families, including those of British, Australian, Chinese, Korean and American nationality.
Location and facilities
The school is located near a popular expatriate area of Kuala Lumpur. The school started classes at a temporary facility in 2009 in Bandar Utama, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur. In 2011 a permanent campus was completed. A second campus adjacent to the current one was completed in 2013. In 2016 the school opens an additional campus for Secondary and Sixth Form students.
