The cup is named after Brendan Martin, a native of Tullamore, County Offaly, who organised ladies' football games in the early 1970s and became one of the first treasurers of the newly founded Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. Kerry and Cork are the most successful teams in the Ladies' Championship. They have both won the Brendan Martin Cup on 11 occasions. Cork are the current holders of the Brendan Martin Cup.
