After winning a contest to go to Hollywood, Calif., Canadian actress Wanda Gale (Pat Paterson) falls for the promises of con man Smoothie (Spencer Tracy) and his partner, Limey (Herbert Mundin). Concocting a story that Wanda is the daughter of a British lord, impersonated by Limey, Smoothie gets Wanda noticed by cynical, drunken director Hal Reed (John Boles). After Smoothie and Limey blackmail Hal, he romances Wanda and makes her a star in his films prompting unexpected jealousy in Smoothie.

Promoter Smoothe King helps a pair of phonies con their way into a movie company. As Wanda heads toward stardom, she turns more and more from King toward the matinée idol. King must decide between his plans and her happiness.

The film tells the story of a promoter who helps a Hollywood extra actress toward stardom, however she turns from him toward her leading man.
