Blue Bra Girl is an image of a veiled woman who was beaten by the military in Cairo, Egypt's Tahrir Square in December, 2011.

Overview

Many people uploaded pictures and videos of the beating to Facebook and YouTube, which gave it a lot of attention worldwide. This picture shows the abuse of power by the military. This woman's face is covered but her stomach is bare and her blue bra is being shown, which is how she received the nickname "blue bra girl". This woman is being dragged by one military man while another one is about to kick her chest. Because of this, thousands of men and women marched in Tahrir Square. Observers estimate that this attracted the most women to participate in a march in years. This is a result of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, which gave the military the power after overthrowing Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak . Many other people were injured and killed, which created this injustice symbol. The Egyptian military apologized after, but they blamed the protestors for creating the problem. Men and women held up banners of the woman's body and signs opposing the military's power.
