The Biotechnology Institute is an independent nonprofit organization founded to teach the public about the benefits of biotechnology. It was created in 1998 by the biotechnology industry and is located in Arlington, Virginia.
Its mission is to educate people about the "potential for solving human health, food and environmental problems." To help accomplish this, it hosts the BIO convention in May every year, where businesses in the biotechnology sector from across the world meet, many lectures on biotechnology and advancements in the sector in the past year are delivered, and the sanofi-aventis international BioGENEius Challenge is held.
