The Korean hip hop group Big Bang first began their career in 2006, with their formation being documented on television. The group's debut was fairly successful, with their first album netting in sales of over 150,000 copies. It spawned several airplay singles, including "La La La" and "We Belong Together". The group's first mini-album Always (2007), included the lead-single "Lie" (Korean: 거짓말; Revised Romanization: Geojinmal), which became the group's first number-one hit. Their following mini-albums followed its predecessor's footsteps: Hot Issue yielded "Last Farewell" (Korean: 마지막 인사; Revised Romanization: Majimak Insa) while Stand Up spawned "Day by Day" (Korean: 하루하루; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru); both singles were chart-toppers. Their second album Remember was released on November 5, 2008. The album yielded the two singles "Sunset Glow" and "Strong Baby," with the former becoming a number one hit and the latter reaching the No. 2 spot.
The group has also made a transition towards the Japanese music industry. Their first Japanese EP For the World, was released in early 2008, and their first self-titled official Japanese album was released on August 19, 2009. The latter was promoted with two singles: "My Heaven," that debuted at No. 3 on the Oricon Chart, and "Gara Gara Go!!" (ガラガラ GO!!). They released the song "Lollipop" with their labelmate 2NE1 in 2009 to promote the LG Cyon's Lollipop phone. The song reached the No. 1 spot on various online charts. Tonight was their first new material released in South Korea after two-year hiatus as a group. With Alive they became the first Korean artist with a Korean album to chart in the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Blue" reached the number one position on all major domestic charts. After a three-year hiatus, Big Bang made their comeback by releasing special "project singles" for their album Made: "M," "A," "D," and "E." All songs of the album charted within Gaon Digital Chart's Top 3, including five number-ones.
Including the members' solo releases and sub-units, Big Bang have sold over 140 million records, with over 128 million singles and 13 million albums in Korea, Japan and China, making them the best-selling digital group of all-time in Asia and one of the best-selling boy bands in the world.
