Biete or Biate is one of the oldest languages in India. The speakers of the language are known as Biate and are spread over many parts of North East India. However, the majority of Biate speaking population today is concentrated in the districts of Dima Hasao(formerly North Cachar) and Cachar in Assam and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. Speakers are also found in the state of Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. According to the 2001 census of India there were 20,000 speakers of the language in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

Biete is spoken in the following locations (Ethnologue).

  • Aizawl district, northeastern Mizoram: in Darlawn, Ratu, and New Vervek villages
  • Assam: Dima Hasao (formerly North Cachar) and Cachar district
  • Manipur
