History

The heart of the program is a monograph series called "f i l m :", with books about directors (such as Tim Burton, Spike Lee, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and others) and actors (e.g. Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando etc.). Licenses sold to the U.K. (Titan Books) and to the USA (Limelight Editions). The "Stars!" series portrays actors of present-day cinema, and the series "Deep Focus" assembles selected academic studies on film - analyses and theory, film history and critical reflexions. Among the authors are Thomas Elsaesser and Marcus Stiglegger.

Many publications in cooperation with film institutions, such as the DEFA foundation or the Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum für Film und Fernsehen. Since 2003, Bertz + Fischer publishes the catalogues of the retrospectives of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).

In 2006, the program expanded to audiobooks. The series "original+ungekürzt" presents unabrigded readings of English Classics (Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, James Joyce etc.), "Get Shakespeare! Fast and Easy" re-tells the plots of Shakespeare's most famous plays in prose, and the series "Crime Wave" presents modern American crime literature (Raymond Chandler, Elmore Leonard).
