The Benton Shale is a geologic formation in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska. It preserves fossils dating back to the Cretaceous Period.

It derives its name from Fort Benton, a small city in Montana on the Upper Missouri River.
