East Bentleigh is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Located 14 kilometres from the CBD. Its local government area is the City of Glen Eira. At the 2011 Census, Bentleigh East had a population of 25,925.

History

The suburb, like its neighbour Bentleigh, was named after the infamous Victorian politician Thomas Bent. Part of East Bentleigh was inside the original grant of land bought by English farmer and brewer, Henry Dendy, in 1841. He bought 5,120 acres (20.7 km2) which was bounded on the west by Port Phillip Bay, then North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. Bentleigh East Post Office opened on 9 January 1928 and closed in 1995, although Bentleigh East Delivery Centre remains open. Coatesville Post Office on Mackie Road opened on 1 April 1955.

East Bentleigh police station closed in the early 1990s and the building remains standing on the corner of East Boundary Road and Omeo Court, near Centre Road (opposite the hotel).

Geography

East Bentleigh is 15 km south-east from Melbourne's central business district. It is bounded to the west by Tucker Road, to the north by North Road, to the east by Warrigal Road and to the south by South Road. It is bisected by Centre Road. The area around Mackie Road is the locality of Coatesville.

Education

Government schools within East Bentleigh include Valkstone Primary School, Coatesville Primary School, Tucker Road Primary School, Bentleigh Secondary College (formerly Moorabbin City Secondary College and before that, Bentleigh High School) and East Bentleigh Primary School (formerly Moorabbin Heights Primary School - in Bignell Road). This school includes a Steiner stream which has about half of the 300 students.

Government schools closed during the 1990s included East Bentleigh Primary School (in Centre Road), Eastmoor Primary School and Moorleigh High School (now Moorleigh Village)

Features

Features of the area include the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC), previously known as the East Bentleigh Swim Centre. Another feature is the Monash Medical Centre (Moorabbin Campus).

Golfers play at the course of The Yarra Yarra Golf Club on Warrigal Road.
