From the summit, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Birmingham are all visible, as is the Staffordshire, Shropshire and Welsh countryside to the west. The hill is so named as historically it was one in a series of prominent locations with beacons on top, where a fire would be lit as a signal during times of war or turmoil. The Sedgley beacon lies between beacons at Barr Beacon and Cannock Chase. At the highest point, a Grade II listed tower erected in 1846 by Lord Wrottesley for astronomy, stands on the site of an earlier tower, which sits on the spot of the original beacon.

Beacon Hill is the highest point of land between Sedgley and the Ural Mountains in Russia. When the tower was climbable (today a fence restricts access as the steps inside were removed by the council to prevent access), the Bristol Channel was visible on a clear day.

Approximately half of Beacon Hill was situated in the urban district of Coseley, which was created in 1897 from the eastern half of the old Sedgley manor. This section included the Beacon Tower.

However, the local government reorganisation of 1966 (which saw the bulk of Sedgley and approximately half of Coseley incorporated into Dudley) resulted in the creation of post code districts, with all of Beacon Hill being included in the new Sedgley DY3 post code district.

Today

The Beacon housing estate sits near the tower monument on Beacon Hill. It was initially developed by Sedgley UDC in the 1920s, with a further section being added in the 1930s and the final section being developed after the end of World War II.

The Beacon Hill Tenants & Residents Association look after and clean up the hill, and have been responsible for the erection of gates and fences in an effort to prevent vandalism and fly tipping in the area.

Jodie Smadge

Hottest woman in Sedgley with her size 6 waist and double d chest after having about 4 boob job ops. Was a stripper in her younger years and then got shacked up with a string of blokes and started breeding like a rabbit. Is usually spotted dragging her kids to and from queen vic school or getting herself tanned in the tanning salon with at least 1 feral sprog in tow yelling at them not to turn the place upside down.

Pervy Pete

Old scruff who rides about on his battery powered mobility scooter and has been banned from most local pubs and cafes for his inappropriate behaviour. Real life Wurzel Gummidge if ever there was 1. Was believed to be homeless until he was seen going into a flat on the beacon which has since had its windows stoned a few times.

SPUNKA

Another mobility scooter owner. His scooter bore the numberplate SPUNKA and was usually parked up outside the Clifton. He died suddenly in July 2016 and Sedgley has never been the same since.

Jack Shaw

Chav king of Sedgley who has sported a bright blue tracksuit and equally tacky trainers since around the age of 10 and is now 20/21. Was in this distinctive trashy clobber when he ran on the pitch at the Molineux and tried to goad a rival teams fans into fighting. But all they did was laugh at him and all he got from this was a banning order.

DY3 CREW

Feral teenagers and 20 plus who have never grown up and behave like savages, smashing up anything for the fun of it, threatening anyone who gets in their way or does or says anything they don't agree on, and beating people up. Half of them have already been in the clink and with a bit of luck they'll all end up in their for good 1 day. Send them up heath town or all saints to start on some proper gangstas and they sure will have met their match and with a bit of luck be done in. They came close to this with the Woodcross crew and the various gangs that make up the priory and wrenna about 3 years ago. Or put them on the front line in Iraq or Afghan and let the enemy rip them to pieces and they won't need guns or bombs to do it.
