A bawab (Arabic: بواب bawwāb [bæwˈwæːb], "doorman") is a doorman, common throughout Egypt. A bawab's job is to take care of the house to which they are assigned. Bawabs are usually male and wear a gallabeya (a type of kaftan), a native Egyptian dress. Bawabs are also usually from southern Egypt. Their salary is determined and paid by residents of the house or the residential building.
