On April 20, 2015 there was an assault in Joan Fuster High School in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The attack was carried out by a 13-year-old student. He was armed with a crossbow and a machete, On arrival to school, he started shooting in a class with the crossbow, resulting in one deceased teacher and four injured students. The killings ended when one teacher convinced the student to drop his weapons, therefore averting a possible massacre.
This assault was the first ever school shooting to happen in Spain.
After the shooting, the suspect's classmates and close friends said that he "was a withdrawn boy who had academic problems". They, along with most other people, were aware of a "blacklist" which included twenty people's names who he wanted to kill. Friends argued that he had spent months talking about it, but they thought it was a "sick joke". The Minister of Education said that the boy was admitted and assessed at the Sant Joan de Dèu hospital, where he was diagnosed with a psychotic breakdown.
According to the laws in Spain, the youth is exempt from responsibility, being less than 14 years old.
