Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden (1611–1682) was an English politician. He was Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Custos Rotulorum of Rutland and the Member of Parliament for Rutland.

Early life

Baptist Noel was born at Exton Hall, Rutland the son of Edward Noel, 2nd Viscount Campden.

Career

Noel succeeded to his titles on the death of his father in 1643. He was also Baron Noel of Ridlington and Baron Hicks of Ilmington. He was elected as a knight of the shire for Rutland in the Long Parliament of 1640.

During the Civil War he was a military commander, rising to the level of brigadier-general.

Personal life and death

Noel married four times:

  • first, to Lady Anne, daughter of William Feilding, 1st Earl of Denbigh (having three children, all of whom died young);
  • secondly, to Anne, daughter of Sir Robert Lovett of Liscombe, Buckinghamshire, and widow of Edward Bourchier, 4th Earl of Bath (sine prole);
  • thirdly, to Hester, daughter of Thomas Wotton, 2nd Baron Wotton (having four daughters and two sons, Edward and Henry);
  • and, lastly, to Elizabeth Bertie (b.1640- d.1683), daughter of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey (having nine children, including Baptist, Mary (second wife of James Compton, 3rd Earl of Northampton), and Catherine (third wife of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland).
  • Noel was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Edward.

    On his death in 1682 he was buried in the church of St Peter and St Paul, Exton. His grave is marked by a fine marble tomb by Grinling Gibbons, dating from 1685, showing the Viscount with his fourth wife, Elizabeth Bertie, and carvings of his 19 children.
