The Bamberg potato (German: Bamberger Hörnla) is an old potato variety from Franconia, named after the town of Bamburg, in Bavaria.
The predominantly waxy potato is small with an elongated and crooked form. It has firm light yellow flesh with a nutty aroma. The growing area is only situated in Southern Germany and registered by the European Union as a “regional specialty”. The variety was about to become extinct as cultivation is very laborious and the yield is rather low, so not grown commercially by farmers. It is only normally grow in gardens for home usage. Outside the growing areas, this variety can only be bought in delicatessen shops, from specialised traders, farmer's markets, or in organic grocery stores.
It was voted "potato of the year 2008".
