The Bahraini passport is issued to citizens of Bahrain for international travel. They are made available through the General Directorate of Nationality, Passports & Residence. This institution, one of the earliest of its kind in the region, first issued passports in 1929. It was criticized in 1996 by journalist Robert Fisk for its refusal to renew the passports of some Bahraini nationals, thus imposing an effective exile on these individuals.
Visa requirements
In 2016, Bahraini citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 73 countries and territories, ranking the Bahraini passport 65th in the world according to the Visa Restrictions Index.
