These are the official results of the Men's 400 metres event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The competition was held on 3 & 7 of September. On the victory podium Collett and Matthews staged a protest in which they stood with their sweatsuits open, and during the national anthem, looked around, did not stand at attention or look at the United States flag, they also talked openly with each other. The IOC banned them from further competition, this prevented the United States from having a 4 x 400 relay team.
Julius Sang became the first black African to win a sprint Olympic medal.
