The biggest building project carried out in Asti in the medieval commune period was the construction of the city walls . Starting from a few fortifications surviving from the Roman and Lombard periods, between the 12th and the 14th centuries the Commune constructed over 7 kilometres of city wall in two rings which completely enclosed the residential centre of the city.

Of these only the north-west section has been conserved. In other parts of Asti the walls have been incorporated into buildings and only small sections are distinguishable.
