  • – Yachihata Station in Japan is closed.
  • April 3
  • – The French TGV sets a new train speed record. The train, with a modified engine and wheels, reached 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph). The record attempt took place on the new LGV Est line between Paris and Strasbourg using a specially equipped TGV Duplex train. The overhead lines had also been modified for the attempt to carry 31,000 V rather than the line's normal 25,000 V.
  • April 7
  • – Weekday service begins on T Third Street light-rail line in San Francisco, leading to massive delays in the city's Muni Railway system.
  • April 18
  • – Chinese railway officials launch the 6th large-scale speed up which introduces of high-speed rail service in the People's Republic of China. The new CRH trains are capable of traveling at speeds up to 250 km/h (155 mph) between major cities. Although ticket sales began on April 14, sales have not met railway officials' expectations, leading some Ministry of Railways officials to propose lowering the fares.
  • April 23
  • – Turkish State Railways (TCDD) begins High Speed Train trials on the newly built Ankara-Eskişehir high speed line, on the day of National Sovereignty and Children's Day.
  • – Construction resumes on the Second Avenue Subway in New York City, between 92nd and 95th streets.
  • April 28
  • – The Orange Line of Montreal Metro is extended 5.2 kilometres (3.2 mi) to Montmorency in Laval.
